MANILA – The Ateneo Blue Eagles continued its streak in the UAAP Season 79 men’s seniors basketball tournament with a 74-59 win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Ilonggo Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III led the way with double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Eagles, which tallied its fourth straight win for a 7-4 win-loss record.
Rookie George Go added 14 markers, while Adrian Wong contributed 12 points, on four three-point baskets, for the Blue Eagles, which repeated its first round domination of the Tamaraws.
“Our players did a good job staying focused on the task at hand,” said Blue Eagles head coach Sandy Arespacochaga. “They have been improving. It is a very nice feeling this growth process.”
Both teams had a tight exchange at the start of the match with the Tamaraws holding on to an 11-10 lead, but the Blue Eagles, behind the three-point baskets by Ravena, Go and Aaron Black, surged to a 24-14 lead.
The Blue Eagles continued its domination in the second frame behind Ravena and Black to maintain a 34-23 upperhand. Baskets by Jolo Mendoza, Vince Tolentino and Kris Porter extended the Blue Eagles lead to 46-28 at halftime.
With its hot shooting from downtown, the Blue Eagles surged to its largest lead of the game at 58-35 on a triple by Anton Asistio. But the Tamaraws responded to come to within 48-38 early in the final quarter.
The Tamaraws pulled even closer at 60-52 late in the fourth quarter but the Blue Eagles responded with conversions from Ravena, Wong and Go to clinch its fourth straight victory.
Monbert Arong top-scored with 15 points, while Prince Orizu chipped in double-double 11 points and 16 rebounds for the defending champion Tamaraws, which suffered its second straight loss to slide down to a 8-4 record./PN
