MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles handed the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons its first defeat in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-21 sweep on Sunday night at the San Juan Arena.

Jhoanna Maraguinot and Bea de Leon led the way with 11 points apiece for the Lady Eagles, which tied defending champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers on top with a 5-1 win-loss slate.

Michelle Morente added 10 markers, while rookie Kat Tolentino contributed nine points for the Lady Eagles, which is gearing up for a rematch with archrival Lady Spikers on March 4.

The Lady Eagles had an aggressive start behind Morente, Maraguinot and Julia Morado for an 18-9 edge. The Lady Maroons tried to make a run to come to within single digits but Maraguinot and de Leon closed the set with back-to-back hits.

Just like in the opening set, the Lady Eagles had another strong opening in the second for a 16-10 edge on hits by Maraguinot and Morado. The Lady Maroons pulled to within 20-17 but the Lady Eagles pulled away for a set win behind Maraguinot and de Leon.

In the third set, the Lady Eagles zoomed to a 19-9 advantage on hits by Morado, Maddie Madayag and de Leon. The Lady Maroons answered back to within 23-20 but back-to-back hits by Lady Eagles’ Tolentino and Maraguinot ended the match.

Yung buong linggo, okay naman ang ensayo. Tapos good mood si coach Tai (Bundit), kaya masaya lahat,” said Lady Eagles assistant coach Sherwin Meneses. “Masaya sila, masaya rin si coach Tai.”

Diana Carlos and Maria Lina Molde top-scored with 12 points apiece for the Lady Maroons, which slid down to third place in the standings with a 4-1 win-loss record./PN
