Ateneo drubs Letran in PVL collegiate opener

MANILA – Ateneo Lady Eagles overcame a rough second set to pull off a 25-16, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20 win over Letran Lady Knights at the start of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the San Juan Arena.


Faith Nisperos made an impressive debut with 19 points, on 17 attacks and two service aces on Saturday while Vanessa Gandler and Ericka Raagas added 15 and 11 markers, respectively.

Ilongga Danielle Theris Ravena had double-double 23 digs and 10 excellent receptions.

Setter Janel Maraguinot contributed 24 excellent sets.

After easily winning the opening set behind Nisperos and Gandler, the Lady Eagles – the reigning UAAP women’s volleyball champion – struggled early in the second frame before mounting a run to tie the count at 22-all.

The Lady Knights stole the set on back-to-back service aces by Edma Ann Musng. The Lady Eagles, however, regained its form in the third set with a 16-8 start behind Nisperos and Julia Samonte.

The lead grew further for Ateneo on consecutive attack points from Nisperos.


The Lady Knights took the early lead in the fourth set but they were unable to sustain it. Nisperos and Gandler conspired to give the Lady Eagles a 19-14 edge.

Joan Narit and Maraguinot then sealed the win with attacks.


In the first game, College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers toppled Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 28-26, 25-22, 25-17. Klarisa Abriam delivered 13 points, while Chelsea Umali added 10 markers for the Lady Blazers./PN
