MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles ventured into its post-Alyssa Valdez era with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Jhoanna Maraguinot lived up to the lofty billing as Valdez’s heir apparent to lead the way with 15 points for the Lady Eagles, which joined the National University Lady Bulldogs and the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons with a 1-0 win-loss slate.

Michelle Morente made a triumphant return with nine hits while rookie Kat Tolentino made her presence felt with eight points for the Lady Eagles, which was a two-time champion before losing the crown to the De La Salle University Lady Spikers last year.

“I think people expected us to have jitters and everything. But at the end of the game, lumabas naman yung nai-training namin, and hopefully in the following games tumuloy ang improvement,” said Lady Eagles’ Julia Morado, who tossed in 45 excellent sets.

The Lady Eagles was aggressive from start to finish behind Maraguinot, Morente, Tolentino, and Bea de Leon to finish off the erroneous Golden Tigresses, which had a poor floor defense as it allowed 11 service aces by the Lady Eagles.

Ennajie Laure finished with 17 hits while Cherry Rondina added 10 points for the Golden Tigresses, which slid down to a 0-1 slate along with the University of the East Lady Warriors and Lady Falcons.

Meanwhile, UP Fighting Maroons jumpstarted its campaign in the men’s division with a 24-26, 25-20, 31-33, 27-25, 15-10 win over the Adamson Falcons. John Mark Villete top-scored with 19 points for the Maroons.

Far Eastern University Tamaraws also had an impressive opening in the season as it swept the DLSU Green Spikers, 25-16, 25-19, 26-24. Gregorio Dolor finished with 15 points for the Tamaraws./PN
