MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles continued its hot start in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball by sweeping the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15, on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Jhoanna Maraguinot led the way with 17 points for the Season 78 runner-up Lady Eagles, which maintained its hold on the top spot in the standings with a 7-1 win-loss slate.

Rookie Kat Tolentino added 10 markers, while Michelle Morente had nine points and 13 digs for the Lady Eagles, which also got 38 excellent sets from Julia Morado in just three sets.

Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws got back on the winning track with a win over the Adamson University Lady Falcons. The Lady Tamaraws moved up to a 5-4 slate, while the Lady Falcons slipped to 0-9.

The Lady Eagles quickly made its presence felt in the first set to surge to a 16-8 lead on hits by Maraguinot and Morente. The Lady Maroons came to within four but consecutive points by Bea de Leon and Maraguinot closed the set.

From a tight start, the Lady Eagles pulled away midway in the second set courtesy of de Leon and Tolentino for a 16-11 lead. The Lady Eagles then tightened its defense to build a 2-0 set advantage.

The Lady Eagles went for the kill in the third set as it built an 11-4 lead on a Morado drop shot. The Lady Maroons clawed to within five but conversions from Maraguinot and Morente ended the match.

 

Isa Molde top-scored with eight points, while Diana Carlos added seven markers for the Lady Maroons, which suffered its fourth consecutive loss to slide down to a 4-4 win-loss mark./PN
