MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University turned to its veterans to sweep the men’s and women’s championships in the UAAP Season 80 swimming at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Blue Eagles nailed on Monday a four-peat in the men’s division behind three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Jessie Lacuna to finish the four-day event with 567 points – way ahead of second placer De La Salle University (328) and University of the Philippines (191).
Lacuna, a two-time Olympian, spearheaded Blue Eagles’ title run with a seven-gold medal romp. Teammate Miguel Barlisan captured the Rookie of the Year plum after bagging two golds, a silver and a bronze.

Jessie Lacuna led the Ateneo’s charge to the overall championship in the UAAP Season 80 men’s swimming with seven golds.
Also composing the Blue Eagles swim team are team captain Aldo Batungbacal, Season 79 Rookie of the Year Miguel Arellano, Carlo Silva, Paolo Mutuc, Akiva Carino, Leandre Buhain, and Jeric Santos.
Meanwhile Lady Eagles reclaimed the women’s title behind newcomer Chloe Daos, who captured six golds and a silver and was named Rookie MVP.
Lady Eagles, now with four UAAP women’s swimming titles, needed a strong effort in the final day to end up with 483 points, 46 points ahead of the runner-up UP Lady Maroons. University of Santo Tomas was third with 105 points.
Moreover, UST and De La Salle-Zobel defended their titles in the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Sacho Ilustre and Nikki Pamintuan emerged as boys’ and girls’ MVP, respectively./PN
