Valdez almost missed hometown match after Iloilo airport mishap
VOLLEYBALL superstar Alyssa Valdez was one of those whose schedules were hampered by the several days of closure of the Iloilo International Airport after a Cebu Pacific plane veered off the runway on Oct. 13.
Valdez nearly missed her commitment to play for Creamline Cool Smashers in the Premier Volleyball League on Tour at her hometown of Batangas on Sunday after getting stranded at the airport.
She scampered for a plane ticket to Manila on Sunday morning until she decided to travel by ferry to Bacolod where she was able to board an afternoon flight to Manila.
Upon arriving in Manila, the former Ateneo Lady Eagles star traveled by land heading to the Batangas City Coliseum just in time for Cool Smashers’ game against Perlas-BanKo Lady Spikers.
Valdez said she made sure she will not miss that match as it was a rare opportunity for her to play in front of her fellow Batangueños.
“I was inspired to play hard because the fans who came to watch us here deserve nothing less,” said Valdez, who led her team to a 17-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 19-17 win over Lady Spikers.
Last night Valdez played for Cool Smashers in the PVL on Tour in Iloilo City. She will be in Bacolod today for the final phase of the exhibition matches. She will then return to Taiwan to play as import for the Attack Line squad.
BLIND ITEM: The days of a head coach of a collegiate basketball team are numbered, especially if he will not be able to wield his team to a championship in an ongoing league.
A source told Buzzer Beater those behind the collegiate basketball team want the head coach out not because of his inability to handle the team but for being a bad influence to his players.
“Iyong mga supporters and alumni ng school gusto na siyang patanggal sa puwesto dahil may pagkabarumbado itong si coach. Iyong school pa naman niya may inaalagaang reputasyon,” said the source.
“Sa coaching skills wala namang problema si coach pero, iyon nga, nagiging bad influence na siya sa mga players niya. Minsan imbes na siya ang umaawat sa away siya pa itong nakikisali,” added the source.
“Sabagay hindi mo rin masisisi si coach kung maging mayabang. Papaano nakatsamba. First two years niya bilang head coach nakadalawang championship siya agad,” he said.
The informant also said what keeps the head coach from getting dismissed despite his being a bad influence is the support of the collegiate basketball team’s sponsor.
“May tiwala pa sa kanya si big boss kasi nga napa-champion niya. Tingnan mo kapag nadisgrasya iyan this season, tiyak kakantahan na siya ng ‘Ayoko na sa’yo, ayoko na sa’yo. Break na tayo, ’yan ang gusto ko.’”/PN
