QUAKE SURVIVOR. Western Visayas is no stranger to strong tremors. Panay Island has an active West Panay Fault Line. In Jan. 25, 1948 a magnitude 7.8. pre-dawn tremor jolted the island. It destroyed 55 Spanish-era stone churches and belfries, and triggered a tsunami. The most prominent of these destroyed belfries was the Jaro Cathedral’s. Made of limestone and bricks, its second and third storeys crumbled (inset, sourced from the internet). The belfry was completely restored only in 2022, or 74 years after the tragedy. Will this restored belfry survive should another 7.8 earthquake hit Panay Island? ILOILO CITY GOV’T PHOTO
