Aviation student dies in Cabatuan road crash

ILOILO – A 22-year-old aviation student died after his motorcycle skidded and collided with an oncoming passenger bus along Tigbauan Road in Cabatuan town at around 7 a.m. on Monday, August 17.

Police identified the victim as Armel John Moquite, a resident of Barangay Gines-Patag, Cabatuan, and a first-year student at the Visayas Aerospace College & Technology. He was reportedly en route to his morning classes when the accident occurred.

According to witness accounts, Moquite lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to overturn before sliding into the opposite lane.

An oncoming bus traveling from Iloilo City to Janiuay with several passengers on board struck the victim as he crossed into its path.

Moquite sustained severe body injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police Captain Mary Dhen Gerbolinga, officer-in-charge of the Cabatuan Municipal Police Station, said the bus driver, 43-year-old Lewel Tolentino of Barangay Cansilayan, Pototan, immediately contacted authorities and voluntarily surrendered to the police station following the crash.

Tolentino is currently under custody as the police review witness statements and gathered evidence to determine appropriate legal action./PN
