MANILA – Passengers across the country, including those in Western Visayas, were warned against patronizing “fly-by-night” or “colorum” interisland vessels.

Such vessels are not registered and cannot guarantee safety, thus riding them is dangerous, according to Lieutenant Commander Armand Balilo, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson.

“In case of accidents, wala silang (passengers) habol.”

The PCG will monitor ports to make sure no unauthorized ships can travel as passenger ships, said Balilo.

“Safety of the public is our primary concern,” he said. “We are very serious in monitoring and apprehending colorum vessels. These vessels, if tolerated, may cause a major tragedy, which we don’t want to happen.”

Colorum ships, commonly fishing vessels, are unregistered or without documentary requirements and thus do not comply with safety standards set by the Maritime Industry Authority./PN
