BACOLOD City – Firefighters advised the public to avoid fires, especially during the New Year revelry.
While the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) can respond to fires, the community must take steps to prevent such incidents, according to Senior Inspector Publio Ploteña, Operations Division chief.
Fire stations across the region are on Code Red from Dec. 18, 2016 to Jan. 2, 2017.
The BFP’s yuletide fire prevention campaign has the theme “Kaalaman sa Kaligtasan sa Sunog Tungo sa Masayang Pagdiriwang ng Pasko at Pagsalubong sa Bagong Taon.”
Ploteña advised the public to make sure the Christmas lights they are using are of good quality.
The products must have import commodity clearance and/or product safety stickers, said the fire official.
Defective Christmas lights are a common cause of fires.
Ploteña said the public must buy them only from authorized stores and avoid using them for a long period of time.
“Octopus connections” must also be avoided, he stressed.
Ploteña also discouraged the public from using firecrackers.
BFP-Negros officials are checking the readiness of fire station across the region.
Fire trucks and crews have been deployed for visibility, while all personnel leaves had been suspended, Ploteña told Panay News.
He said the BFP is also coordinating with local chief executives, police, Department of Health, disaster management offices, and rescue groups. /PN
