MANILA – Genesis “Azukal” Servania is facing the Mexican Oscar Valdez in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight championship on Sept. 22 at the Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona.
It will be the first world title fight for Servania, who is pumped up heading into the match after disposing of fellow Filipino Ralph John Lulu to take the WBO Asia-Pacific featherweight belt in April in Japan.
Servania – a 25-year-old native of Bacolod City – said the Valdez fight will be the biggest so far in his boxing career.
“I have long been waiting for this kind of match,” he told Panay News. “Fighting in a world championship match has been my dream. I think this fight is for me to win.”
His trainer, the Negrense Mark Gill Melligen, believes his boxer has what it takes to score an upset against Valdez, one of Mexico’s decorated boxers.
Servania will be parading a perfect 29-0-0 win-loss-draw record, including 12 knockout victories.
“This is a good fight. Valdez fights well and has a lot of amateur experience but Servania has a big chance,” Melligen said. “Genesis has grown into his punching power and is boxing smarter.”
Among Servania’s wins were against veterans Gerson Guerrero, Genaro Garcia, Konosuke Tomiyama, Rafael Concepcion, and Jose Cabrera.
Valdez also has an unblemished 22-0-0 record, including 19 stoppage wins. This face-off with Servania will be his third title defense after previously beating Miguel Marriaga and Hiroshige Osawa./PN
