MANILA ā€“ Veteran gunner Jeffrei Chan was as stunned as every fan when Rain or Shine Elasto Painters decided to trade him to Phoenix Fuel Masters earlier this week.
Chan, a native of Bacolod City, thought he will end his PBA career with Rain or Shine after playing for the franchise for nine years and helping it win two titles.
ā€œI was surprised because I think I was loyal to them (Painters),ā€ Chan told the press after practicing with Phoenix. ā€œI also helped them achieve their goals (win championships). But that is how it works in the PBA.ā€
ā€œI will take this trade as a challenge,ā€ the former Gilas Pilipinas cager added. ā€œSometimes, as a player, itā€™s good for us to take on new challenges. It adds to the motivation.ā€
The 33-year-old Chan was one of the consistent contributors for Painters in the ongoing PBA Governorsā€™ Cup, where he averaged 9 points on 27-percent shooting from three and 1.67 assists.
Chan, who previously played for the University of St. La Salle, is expected to be an added boost to Fuel Mastersā€™ offense that also features 3-point slingers Matthew Wright, RJ Jazul, John Wilson, and Angelo Alolino.
ā€œIā€™m not expecting anything from Phoenix. I just want to help my team win more games,ā€ Chan said. ā€œI just want to help guide this team, especially the younger players.ā€
ā€œI hope to help the team have a good run this conference. Phoenix is a young team,ā€ he added. ā€œAnd if not this conference, maybe next season. Weā€™ll see.ā€/PN
