BACOLOD City – For the first time, the city government has allocated P1.3 million for the implementation of the ‘Libre Kapon’ program, a spaying and neutering initiative for dogs and cats under the City Veterinary Office (CVO).
Dr. John Michael Cabuguason, assistant city veterinarian, said the said program is a vital component of the city’s rabies prevention and animal welfare campaign.
While similar activities have been conducted in the past, these were primarily funded by private organizations and volunteer groups. This year marks the first time the city government has committed a substantial budget for the procurement of anesthesia and other medical supplies needed for the procedure.
“This is the first time the city has allocated P1.3 million for this project because it was not previously prioritized by the department head concerned,” Cabuguason explained.
The rollout of the program is scheduled for July, with the CVO currently finalizing the venue for the operations.
“Ginaplanuhan na namon ang mga schedule, possible sa mga barangay or schools hiwaton ang activity. Pero ginatun-an man namon ang posibilidad nga mag set up sang spay and neuter clinic,” Cabuguason added
Spaying and neutering are key strategies in controlling the population of stray animals in the city, which is crucial in reducing the risk of rabies transmission and promoting overall public safety and animal welfare./PN
