BACOLOD City — Grief and condemnation swept across Bacolod City and neighboring Bago City following the death of a police officer during an anti-illegal drug operation, as authorities also confirmed the death of the suspect a day after his arrest.
Police Master Sergeant Romulo Galvez Jr., assigned to Police Station 9 of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), was wounded during a buy-bust operation along Alijis Road in Barangay Singcang-Airport in the early hours of April 10.
According to police reports, a 32-year-old male suspect opened fire using a .45-caliber pistol, hitting Galvez in the thigh. The officer was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries at 12:08 a.m.
Authorities immediately apprehended the suspect at the scene and recovered the firearm along with suspected illegal drugs.
Mayor Greg Gasataya strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a direct assault on public safety.
“The City Government of Bacolod condemns this senseless act of violence against our law enforcement personnel. An attack on our police force is an attack on every Bacolodnon,” Gasataya said, vowing that justice would be pursued without compromise.
Earlier that day, Galvez had successfully served multiple warrants of arrest, underscoring what city officials described as his unwavering dedication to duty.
A former member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, Galvez was described by his superiors as one of the finest in the service.
“He died a hero in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in our pursuit of peace and justice,” the mayor added.
Gasataya also extended immediate assistance to the bereaved family and assured continued support. He likewise met with BCPO officer-in-charge Col. Eugene Rebadomia to coordinate efforts in ensuring accountability and due process.
Meanwhile, Bago City paid tribute to Galvez, a native of the city, honoring his courage and lifelong commitment to public service.
In a statement, the city government described him as a “true-blooded Bagonhon” whose bravery and sacrifice would never be forgotten, extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones.
In a related development, authorities reported that the suspect died early morning on April 11 while confined in a hospital.
Police said the suspect was brought to the hospital after his arrest due to health concerns and was experiencing complications. He was later placed under medical care but was declared dead shortly after 5 a.m.
The official cause of death has yet to be released, pending the hospital’s final report.
The suspect was scheduled for inquest proceedings in connection with charges of homicide and illegal drug possession but died before these could be carried out, authorities said./PN
