Bacolod City dengue cases down 40.7%

The Aedes aegypti mosquito transmits the viruses that cause dengue, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The viruses are passed on to humans through the bites of an infective female Aedes mosquito, which mainly acquires the virus while feeding on the blood of an infected person.

BACOLOD City – The number of dengue cases in this capital city declined 40.7 percent, according to the City Health Office (CHO).

From January to June 23 this year, CHO’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit recorded 278 dengue cases in Bacolod, lower compared to 469 in the same period last year.

Deaths due to dengue also dropped, from last year’s five to this year’s three, records from the CHO further showed.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute viral infection that affects infants, young children and adults. It is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes that live and breed in clear, stagnant water.

Recently, Tan said they hosted the ASEAN Dengue Day celebration at the Sum-ag Elementary School.

She also reiterated that Bacolodnons must follow the 4S strategy against dengue – searching and destroying mosquito breeding places, self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and saying no to indiscriminate fogging./PN
