BACOLOD City – City government officials led the commemoration of the 120th death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal yesterday.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the monument of the national hero in Rizal Elementary School.
The commemoration had the theme “Rizal, Kasaysayan: Gabay sa Pagbabago.”
Rizal’s death “has become some a sort of inheritance that we use as guide in our evolution as a people continually in search for freedom, especially from the problems that beset this country,” Mayor Evelio Leonardia said in a speech read by Councilor Renecito Novero.
“Indeed, history is a great teacher,” Leonardia said. “We learn from experience [so] we may not repeat what is bad and copy or improve that which can help us achieve the real transformation we desire.”
Aside from Novero, present were Rep. Greg Gasataya, councilors Bart Orola and Ana Marie Palermo, representatives from the Department of Education, and various other stakeholders.
For his part, Gasataya urged Bacolodnons to be everyday heroes by “emulating the national hero’s love for our motherland.”
“We do not have to choose between the pen and the sword to achieve the much-needed change for our country,” said the congressman.
Everyone should “do their best for our beloved city and country,” he said. “We do not have to be a national hero. In our own little way, let us do everything we can to effect the change all of us dream of.”
Meanwhile Gasataya announced that he and ACT Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio coauthored a bill raising the minimum salary and the personal economic relief allowance of public school teachers and other state employees.
The vice chairman of the House of Representatives committee on higher and technical education also vowed to make sure discussions on the proposed free tuition in state universities and colleges start January 2017./PN
