BACOLOD City – The City Treasurer’s Office and City Legal Office’s Enforcement Team are conducting massive calibration and sealing of weighing scales in three major markets of the metro.
Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets, said they launched the initiative after
receiving complaints that some consumers were victimized by vendors using defective weighing scales.
Pindeda said Burgos, Libertad and Central public markets were subjected to inspection this week.
“We are having an ongoing operation in the city’s three major market but we have yet to determine how many weighing scales were calibrated, sealed and confiscated,” Pineda said.
Pineda also explained that weighing scales must be calibrated every six months in line with the implementation of the Republic Act (RA) No. 7394, the Consumer Act of the Philippines.
Under the RA 7394, any person in violation of the provisions of the law shall be subject to a fine of not less than P500 or by imprisonment of not less than one month but not than five years or both, upon the discretion of the court.
Likewise, the owner-possessor or user of the instrument of weights, upon conviction will be fined of not less than P300, or imprisoned not exceeding one year or both./PN
