BACOLOD City – Vehicular accidents went down 19.5 percent, according to data from the Bacolod City Police Office’s Traffic Management Unit (TMU).

Only 3,039 accidents involving (four-wheeled) vehicles and motorcycles occurred in 2016, compared to the 3,776 in 2015, the data released yesterday showed.

Of the 3,039 accidents last year, 2,494 involved vehicles and 545 involved motorcycles. In 2015 there were only 3,074 and 702 cases, respectively.

In 2016 motorcycle-related accidents resulting to property damage reached 177, while those that caused physical injuries reached 356. In 2015 there were 213 and 463 cases, respectively.

Moreover, homicides involving motorcycles last year reached 12, compared to the 26 in 2015, while there were 19 homicides involving vehicles in both 2015 and 2016.

Chief Inspector Ruel Culanag, TMU officer-in-charge, advised motorists and commuters to be disciplined and extra careful.

In July last year the TMU deployed 14 motorized police officers to various “areas of concern” in three sectors — north, central and south — during peak hours. They made up two teams with seven members each.

Culanag said the TMU teams assist traffic enforcers in responding to major traffic problems.

Meanwhile Superintendent Luisito Acebuche, head of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, said the city now has almost 400 traffic enforcers after the deployment of 107 additional enforcers early this month. (PNA)
