BACOLOD City – The City Health Office (CHO) warned Bacolodnons of leptospirosis after flooding in several areas of the city.
CHO head Dr. Ma. Carmela Gensoli said the public must avoid wading in flooded areas which might be contaminated by the leptospira bacteria.
Humans get infected with leptospirosis through direct contact with the urine of infected animals or with a urine-contaminated environment, according to the World Health Organization.
The bacteria enter the body through cuts or abrasions on the skin, or through the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, chills, red eyes, muscle pain, and abdominal pain.
If left untreated, leptospirosis may lead to kidney failure, brain damage, massive internal bleeding, and eventually death, according to Gensoli.
This is why the CHO encourages seeking immediate medical attention if someone exhibits the symptoms after being exposed to floodwaters.
Gensoli said medicines against leptospirosis are available at the CHO and barangay health centers.
The CHO has recorded 13 cases of suspected leptospirosis in the first half of the year. Of these cases, one led to death./PN
