BACOLOD City – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) here confirmed that one of the city’s 61 punong barangays has officially stepped down from her post.
DILG-Bacolod City director Christian Nagaynay disclosed that he received the resignation letter of Barangay 13 captain Tanya Familiaran on June 20, citing personal reasons for vacating the position.
Following the submission, Nagaynay immediately proceeded to Barangay 13 to oversee a smooth transition and ensure that barangay operations would not be disrupted.
In accordance with the rule of succession, the first barangay councilor, Cecilia Chavez, automatically assumed the position of punong barangay.
Nagaynay added that further steps in the transition include filing the necessary requirements to update the barangay’s authorized financial signatories.
To fill the vacant seat in the Sangguniang Barangay, the remaining council members may recommend a qualified individual to the new punong barangay, who will then forward the recommendation to the city mayor for approval.
However, Nagaynay clarified that it is up to the current members of the Sangguniang Barangay whether or not they wish to fill the vacant position, as the council still retains a quorum.
This marks the first resignation of a punong barangay in Bacolod City since the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections held on October 30, 2023./PN
