Bago City cancels Charter anniv events due to COVID-19 threat

BACOLOD City – The city of Bago in Negros Occidental canceled all scheduled events for its 54th Charter Anniversary amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The southern Negros city is supposed to hold various gatherings and activities for eight days from Feb. 11 to 19.
“The city government decided to cancel the celebration as they do not want to compromise the health and safety of the residents and visitors,” Mayor Nicholas Yulo said.

On Monday afternoon, the City Council approved during a special session Resolution 20-082 “canceling all planned big events, mass gatherings, and activities” related to the anniversary celebration.

The resolution cited the Department of Health (DOH) advisory dated Feb. 7, stating that with the ongoing threat of COVID-19, the public is strongly urged to avoid attending, participating, and organizing events that draw a huge number of people.

The DOH also recommended the cancelation of such planned big events or mass gatherings until further advice.
To further minimize the risk of contracting COVID-19, the public has also been advised to avoid crowded places and continue to practice self-protection measures.

In the resolution, the City Council said “it is the intention of the local officials and functionaries of the city government to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of the constituency and visiting tourists and guests during fiestas and celebration(s).” (With a report from PNA/PN)
