Road Warriors rules Game 1 of PH Cup semis series
MANILA – Cyrus Baguio turned back the hands of time as he lifted NLEX Road Warriors to an 88-87 win over Magnolia Hotshots in Game 1 of the PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With Road Warriors trailing 71-76 midway in the final period, Baguio came up with 5 straight points to tie the count at 80-all. NLEX surged 83-82 on a free throw and a layup by Kiefer Ravena but Hotshots quickly got it back at 84-83.
Road Warriors unloaded 5 straight points on a triple by Alex Mallari and two free throws by Ravena for an 88-84 lead. Hotshots had its last stand 87-88 on a triple by Paul Lee but failed to complete a steal in the next possession.
Baguio finished with conference-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals to lead the way for Road Warriors, while Ravena and Mallari chipped in with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
“Gusto kong magpasalamat kay coach Yeng (Guiao) sa trust na ibinigay niya sa akin. Sinuwerte lang rin siguro tayo this game at nagpapapasok iyong mga shots ko,” said Baguio.
It was actually a tightly contested match. Road Warriors managed to pull away only by early second quarter 29-20 but this was quickly chopped down by Hotshots to 27-32 at the half.
The low-scoring tempo continued in the second half. Hotshots took a lead as high as mere 6 points at some point before Road Warriors came up with a run behind Baguio to snatch the victory.
Ian Sangalang led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds while Peter June Simon chipped in with conference-best 20 markers for Hotshots, which got only 8 points from main man Paul Lee./PN
