MANILA – The Bali Pure Water Defenders completed the semifinals cast in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-13 win over the Laoag Power Smashers at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
American reinforcement Katherine Morrell led the way with 21 points, on 18 attacks, for the Water Defenders, which notched its fourth straight win to improve to a 4-1 win-loss slate.
Amy Ahomiro added 14 markers, while Kaylee Manns contributed 13 points for the Water Defenders, which will hope for its fifth straight win when it faces the Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors tonight.
The Water Defenders surged to an early lead in the opening set, but the Power Smashers leaned on Jorelle Singh to tie the score at 18-all. The game was still tight at 23-22 but errors by the Power Smashers handed the set to the Water Defenders.
Both teams had a tight exchange in the second set with the Power Smashers holding on to a slim 19-18 lead. From there, it became a see-saw battle with the score tied at 24-all. But back-to-back hits by Morrell gave the set to the Water Defenders.
The Water Defenders started strong in the third set as it surged to a 17-7 lead on an Ahomiro attack. The Power Smashers made its last push but the Water Defenders leaned on Morrell to finish off the match.
“We’re keeping it one game at a time, since our goal is to keep on improving,” said Water Defenders’ Charo Soriano. “We’re happy that we made it into the semis, but we would also like to focus on our remaining games.”
Singh finished with 16 markers, while Gretchel Soltones added 11 points for the Power Smashers, which ended its campaign in the tournament with a 2-5 win-loss record./PN
