MALAY, Aklan – All the sacrifices and hard work of Barangay Balusbos performers paid off when swept this year’s Fiesta de Obreros dance competition.
Popularized as the “grandest festival” in Aklan, the weeklong Fiesta de Obreros is being celebrated in honor of Saint Joseph the Worker.
Its festival dance contest on May 1 saw barangay contingents depicting labor, history, culture, and tradition in their performances.
Balusbos (Grupo Mangunguma), scoring 94.72 percent, outclassed 11 other barangays, including defending champion Barangay Sambiray (Grupo Hugpayon) for the top prize of P50,000.
It also brought home all the minor awards — Best in Choreography, Best in Production Design and Best in Street Dancing — and the P15,000 cash prize for each.
Grupo Hugpayon (90.08 percent) placed second and took home P40,000, while Barangay Caticlan (87.20 percent) was third and received P30,000.
All three grand winners received customized trophies from Mayor Ceciron Cawaling, Chief Tourism Operations Officer Felix Delos Santos, and Sangguniang Bayan members Floribar Bautista and Natalie Cawaling-Paderes.
Despite the intense heat, spectators did not leave the municipal plaza for six hours to witness the Obreros performances.
Other contingents were barangays Motag (Grupo Patubas), Kabulihan (Grupo Busay), Dumlog (Grupo Hili-ugyon), Nabaoy (Grupo Mangunguma), Cubay Sur (Grupo Tubuan), Cubay Norte (Grupo Panagat), and Argao, Poblacion and Balabag (Grupo Manugtagon). They received P10,000 each as consolation prizes.
Five barangays — Cogon, Manoc-manoc, Naasog, Napaan, and Yapak — did not join. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
