ROXAS City – A newlywed couple’s “happily ever after” turned into a nightmare after they were barred from leaving a beach resort due to unsettled bills.
Worse, Janice Bonza and husband “Jeff” found out that their marriage was invalid.
Their marriage contract did not bear a license number, and other requirements for a valid marriage have not been complied with — things that they have entrusted to a “wedding planner.”
Jeff requested that his last name be not published.
The couple tied the knot on April 8 at the Baia Norte Beach Club in this city.
They engaged the services of Queenie Barbasa, a friend of Bonza and supposed wedding planner.
Barbasa was supposed to take care of everything — from the food, reception and honeymoon accommodation to securing their marriage license and the pastor to officiate the ceremony.
They all agreed to a P37,700 payment.
The pastor who officiated the wedding claimed Barbasa has not paid him the P5,000 he was promised.
Staffers of the Baia Norte Beach Club told this reporter they called Barbasa after the couple refused to pay the bills totaling P4,282.
“They (couple) thought Barbasa settled the bills for them,” the staffers said.
“She (Barbasa) showed up and paid us a partial amount,” the staffers told this reporter. “But when we followed up on her P2,800 balance, her mobile phone number could no longer be reached.”/PN
