BANKO Perlas Lady Spikers cruised to a 25-23, 17-25, 25-15, 25-18 victory over Ateneo Lady Eagles in the Iloilo leg of the Volleytour Goodwill Game at the Philippine Science High School covered gym in Iloilo City.
Angelique Gervacio, Ryzabelle Devanadera, Amanda Villanueva, Suzanne Roces, and Joy Dacoron took over the scoring cudgels for the veteran-laden Lady Spikers in the four-set romp over the Lady Eagles.
The exhibition match Saturday night was part of Iloilo City’s 81st Charter Day celebration.
It was a seesaw battle for both teams in the opening set – no squad led more than 3 points – but the Lady Spikers got timely shots from Gervacio to take a 1-0 set lead.
Ateneo was able to bounce back in the second set for a 16-11 advantage. Banko Perlas rallied to as close as 14-17 but the Lady Eagles pulled away anew to knot the set count at 1-1.
Lady Spikers countered in the third frame for a 17-11 lead behind three straight aces by Roces and hits from Villanueva and Fenela Emnas. Errors from Lady Eagles followed by booming hits from Gervacio stretched the lead to its largest at 10 points.
Lady Eagles had the early lead in the fourth set but Lady Spikers quickly rallied back to take a 12-11 lead on hits by Gervacio. Devanadera, Roces and Villanueva then took turns on offense to widen the gap to its highest at 24-17.
Last year, both teams also squared up at the University of San Agustin gym, also in Iloilo City, where Lady Eagles won 25-23, 25-18, 25-19, 30-28, 19-25./PN
