ILOILO – The Liga ng mga Barangay (LMB) in this province is planning to push for a total ban on the use of firecrackers.
LMB president Pablito Gemarino said he will convene all village chiefs and the president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) to consult their sentiments with regard to the total ban.
“I know that most of our barangay captains are supportive of this move,” he said.
Gemarino pointed out the significant decrease in the number of the firecracker-related injuries in the province during the holidays as a result of the advocacies of concerned government agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) against firecrackers.
Gemarino said he has been supportive to the move of the Duterte administration for the total of ban of firecrackers.
Records of the Provincial Health Office showed 27 firecracker-related injuries in the province from Dec. 22, 2016 to Jan. 3 of this year.
The figures were lower than the 97 cases recorded on the same period in the previous holiday season.
All victims were males, aged 15 years old and below.
Meanwhile, DOH said it was not wise to pick up “dud” firecrackers – those that failed to explode during the New Year celebrations. They could still bring considerable harm.
“To parents, please prohibit your children from picking up unexploded firecrackers. They could end up in our list of firecracker-related injuries,” warned Dr. May Ann Sta. Lucia, spokesperson of DOH Region 6 for its Oplan Iwas Paputok campaign.
DOH secretary Paulyn Ubial, who had served as regional director of the department in Western Visayas a few years back, made the same appeal.
“Nais naming pakiusapan lalo na ang mga bata na huwag mamulot ng paputok na nagkalat sa kalsada. Siguraduhin din natin na pumunta sa ospital kung ikaw ay nagkasugat sa paputok,” Ubial said.
She added: “Maliit man o malaki ang sugat, dapat pa rin itong malapatan ng tamang gamot. Ang tetano ay nakamamatay at nakukuha ito sa mga paputok. Hangad ng DOH na magkaroon tayo ng isang malusog, ligtas at manigong bagong taon. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
