ILOILO City –A 44-year-old married man from Barangay Salihid, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo was mistaken for a kidnapper.
Dumangas town police arrested the man at around 9:30 a.m. yesterday but was released when he clarified that he did not abduct the 16-year-old girl from Barangay Calao, Dumangas who went with him.
Speaking on the condition that he be identified only by his nickname “Barnie,” the man said he hired the girl, Che-Che (not her real name), as babysitter.
“I took Che-Che with me in good faith. Her aunt gave the girl consent to work for us as babysitter,” Barnie told Panay News, adding that he was only trying to offer the teenager a source of income.
Apparently, this did not turn out well.
It appeared that Che-Che’s uncle did not know about the employment offer, said Police Officer 2 Josibelle Doromal, assistant investigator for the Dumangas police station’s Women and Children Protection Desk.
Fearing that his niece had been kidnapped, the uncle reported to the police. Alarmed officers from Dumangas then headed to Barotac Nuevo.
While they admitted that it was “false alarm” and that there appeared to be a miscommunication among the girl’s relatives, the Dumangas police clarified that taking Barnie in was just part of protocol.
“Che-Che wanted to work for Barnie. Her aunt allowed her. But his uncle thought she was abducted,” Doromal said.
If there was any lesson he learned from his experience, Barnie said it was never to hire anyone younger than 18 years old again.
The girl’s family signed an affidavit of noninterest to signify their lack of intention to file any charge against Barnie./PN
