MANILA – Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said he understands what the families of those killed amid the intensified campaign against drug trafficking feel.
But, at the same time, the Philippine National Police chief does not want officers to go soft on anyone engaged in the drug trade.
“Sa mga pamilya na umaalma, alam kong masakit talaga ’yan sa pamilya na mamatayan,” Dela Rosa said in an ambush interview at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City. “’Wag kayong mag-alala. Ayaw na ayaw ko ng abuso. Siguruhin natin ’yan.”
But “gusto ko kaming mga pulis ay ruthless pagdating sa operation, pagdating sa drugs,” he added. “Pero dapat ’wag mag-abuso. Dapat ’wag mandamay ng taong dapat ’di madamay.”
The police were being criticized for the high number of suspects who got killed in antidrug operations in Bulacan, Manila, Quezon City, Camanava, and Marikina City since Monday last week.
One of the casualties was the 17-year-old Kian delos Santos from Caloocan City. Closed-circuit television camera footage showed operatives apparently dragging delos Santos and handing him a firearm and shabu.
While he sympathizes with the families of the casualties, Dela Rosa said he still wanted his officers alive after the operation.
“I’d rather buhay ’yong pulis ko kesa patay ’yong pulis ko. ’Yon lang po sa akin. Kung pulis ko rin mamamatayan, ako rin ang maaagrabyado at saka ’yong pamilya ng pulis na namatay, sasama ang loob namin,” he said./PN
