MANILA – June Mar Fajardo carried the load for San Miguel Beermen to escape with a 118-112 victory over Kia Picanto in the PBA Governors’ Cup yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Beermen improved to 6-3 and clinched a playoffs spot, with the three-time PBA MVP finishing with conference-high 41 points and 17 rebounds.
Import Terrence Watson and Marcio Lassiter added 16 points apiece while Arwind Santos and Chris Ross contributed 15 each for the Grand Slam-seeking team.
Geron Johnson finished with 42 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists while Negrense Mark Yee added 18 markers for Picanto, which remained winless.
Trailing 56-67 early in the third following a triple by Yee, Beermen made its move behind inside conversions by Fajardo, Santos and Ross to come to within 78-84.
Beermen continued its run in the fourth with inside hits by Fajardo and a triple by Santos to come to within 88-89. Back-to-back hits by Ross and Fajardo allowed San Miguel to take the lead 94-89.
Picanto tried to rally back with two straight triples from Yee and Johnson but Beermen got timely baskets from the inside by Fajardo to build a 112-106 edge after a triple by Santos.
Kia made its last push 109-112 on a 3-pointer by Yee but two free throws by Fajardo followed by back-to-back baskets by Alex Cabagnot sealed the victory for Beermen./PN
