A MAVERICK stands alone. It trains its eyes opposite to a herd’s direction, and follows the path the majority would not dare trudge. Usually, mavericks are killed because of their determination to do things or stand for the principle they believe in. At times they allow themselves to be a sacrifice so others may see the truth.

In our country, to be one with the crowd is the easiest way to blend with them and to be safe. Hence, in the Philippine political arena, there are so many chameleons (a lizard that changes its color to blend with the environment to avoid predators).

We have seen a religious man preaching peace, truth, love for fellow human beings, and of God all the time. We still have in our midst public personalities always advocating for actions and programs to uphold the much abused “general welfare.” Over and above those advocacies though, personal interests prevail. What fattens the pocket and what guarantees power are supreme.

GINA LOPEZ has been a maverick, working hard to pursue her advocacies, the love for her people and her country manifested through her concern for the degradation of our environment. Just travel around our country and you will see how we destroy ourselves in the name of progress. Look at the victims of mercury and other toxic materials, slowly but surely irresponsible mining is depriving us of our right to live a healthy and long life.

Profits? Yes, into the pocket of “the powerful.” Well, never mind those in the immediate vicinity. They are just ordinary people, the masses that public officials pledged to serve and to protect.

We only have one GINA LOPEZ. Expectedly, she would not make it to the Commission on Appointments. For whatever reasons they may have in that secret balloting, what is certain is the Maverick has no place in a democracy which can easily change to demagoguery or DAMAK-

CRAZY. (delsocorrodaquila@gmail.com/PN)
