ILOILO City — With only a few days remaining before the New Year, the Bureau of Fire Protection Region 6 (BFP-6) has issued a series of safety reminders to help prevent fire incidents during the holiday celebrations.
Under the leadership of Fire Chief Superintendent Felixberto Abrenica, BFP-6 urged the public to use fireworks only in open and safe areas, particularly those far from homes, power lines, and flammable materials.
“Use fireworks only in wide, clear areas — away from homes, power lines, and flammable materials,” BFP-6 said in its advisory.
The agency also reminded residents of the dangers posed by damaged or frayed electrical wires, noting that exposed live wires can cause short circuits, sparks, or overheating, which may ignite nearby decorations, curtains, or Christmas trees.
To reduce the risk of electrical fires, BFP-6 encouraged the public to inspect Christmas lights before use, stressing that this simple precaution can help prevent fires, avoid electric shock, and protect families and homes during the holiday season.
The bureau further warned against leaving lighted candles unattended, especially inside homes or on altars, as they pose a significant fire hazard.
Among the candle safety tips issued by BFP-6 are the following:
* do not leave lighted candles unattended;
* keep candles away from flammable materials;
* place candles on sturdy, fire-resistant holders;
* keep candles out of reach of children and pets; and
* consider using LED candles as a safer alternative.
“Let us celebrate the holidays safely and peacefully. In case of fire, immediately contact the nearest fire station,” BFP-6 said.
The agency also emphasized the importance of having a household fire escape plan in place. Families were advised to prepare and practice escape plans that include identifying at least two exits from every room, keeping doors, hallways, and stairways clear of obstructions, and designating a safe meeting area outside the home.
Other reminders include ensuring proper placement of electrical wires, Christmas lights, and candles; practicing the escape plan with all family members; reminding children not to hide during emergencies; and keeping emergency contact numbers visible and easily accessible.
In line with Memorandum Circular No. 2019-009 on the Emergency Alert System and Memorandum Circular No. 2017-012 on Oplan Paalala–Iwas Paputok, BFP-6 has officially activated Oplan Paalala–Iwas Paputok effective December 1, 2025, with all units placed under Code Red status.
All BFP-6 units have been instructed to strengthen fire safety enforcement, intensify public information campaigns, and enhance preparedness measures to prevent fire incidents related to firecrackers and fireworks, ensuring community safety throughout the holiday season./PN
