ILOILO City – As the resumption of classes draws near, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has started inspecting boardinghouses once again.
Foremost among BFP’s concerns is the safety of students staying in boardinghouses, said Fire Senior Superintendent Jerry Candido, officer-in-charge of BFP Iloilo City.
Appropriate fire exits, fire walls, emergency lights, alarm system if the boardinghouse is two storeys or more, and the conduct of fire exit drills are requirements before BFP can issue a permit to boardinghouses.
Candido conceded that his office had difficulty locating all the boardinghouses in the city.
“Admittedly there are boardinghouses that we don’t know exist, especially those who cater only from five to six boarders,” said Candido.
Not all boardinghouses were typically built to house big number of tenants; most were residential houses, he revealed.
Most of these residential houses-turned-boardinghouses were situated in congested barangays, added Candido.
The city fire marshal also said only a few structures in the city could be considered “ideal” boardinghouses like dormitories.
Boardinghouses found to be non-compliant of BFP’s requirements are given 15 days to comply with these requirements.
If they fail, their names are forwarded to the Iloilo City Boarding House Commission or the Business Processing and Licensing Office for appropriate action. (PNA/PN)
