ANTIQUE — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is strengthening firefighters’ capabilities in responding to electric vehicle-related fire emergencies through a three-day Modern Fire Ground Tactics Training held in San Jose de Buenavista from September 30 to October 2.
The training aimed to equip firefighters with updated techniques for handling fires involving lithium-ion batteries, which are increasingly used in electric vehicles.
Provincial Fire Marshal Fire Superintendent Vencie Jojo P. Aldeguer said firefighters must continuously upgrade their skills to keep pace with advancements in vehicle technology and emerging fire hazards.
He said Antique was the first province in Western Visayas to conduct the specialized training, which featured a National Fire Protection Association-certified instructor with international training experience.
Firefighters from all 18 fire stations in Antique participated in lectures on modern firefighting tactics, demonstrations, practical exercises and skills assessments.
The program sought to improve responders’ knowledge and preparedness in dealing with the distinct challenges posed by electric vehicle fires, particularly those involving lithium-ion batteries.
San Jose de Buenavista Fire Station chief Fire Senior Inspector Macario I. Montaña Jr. thanked the municipal government for providing support and funding for the activity.
He said the local government’s assistance would help strengthen firefighters’ knowledge and readiness in carrying out their duties.
San Jose de Buenavista Mayor and lawyer Paul Joseph Untaran, who attended the event, also recognized the firefighters’ dedication and the risks they face in protecting lives and property.
Untaran expressed hope that the training would provide practical benefits to participants and help improve emergency response in their respective communities. (PIA)
