LTO urges motorists to exercise caution when driving at night

BACOLOD City — The Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) has urged motorists to exercise extra caution and strictly observe traffic rules when driving at night to prevent road crashes and protect all road users.

LTO-NIR Officer-in-Charge Regional Director Jeck D. Conlu reminded drivers to take additional precautions amid reduced visibility and other hazards associated with nighttime travel.

Motorists were advised to inspect their vehicles before traveling, ensuring that headlights, taillights, signal lights and brake lights are clean and functioning properly.

The agency also urged drivers to reduce their speed and maintain a safe following distance, noting that limited visibility at night can affect reaction time and increase the risk of collisions.

Drivers were warned against driving under the influence of alcohol. Those who have consumed alcoholic beverages were advised to designate a sober driver or refrain from driving.

The LTO-NIR likewise reminded motorists to avoid driving when fatigued or sleepy. Drivers who feel drowsy should take necessary breaks or pull over in a safe location before continuing their journey.

The agency stressed that traffic signals and road signs must be obeyed at all times, regardless of the time of day.

Motorists were also urged to remain vigilant for pedestrians, particularly in poorly lit areas, near pedestrian crossings and along residential roads where people may be less visible.

The LTO-NIR emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility and called on motorists to make responsible driving a daily practice.

“Safe roads begin with responsible road users,” the agency reminded the public./PN
