BACOLOD City – Vice Mayor Samuel Gavaran of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental passed away.
Mayor Alejandro Mirasol confirmed Gavaran’s demise around 3 a.m. yesterday at their house.
Mirasol said Gavaran had been ill for about a year after he was discharged from the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center due to complications from kidney disease.
“He had been staying at home since then,” Mirasol said.
Mirasol also confirmed that the rule of succession will apply. No. 1 Sangguniang Bayan member Yors Inodeo will fill in the position left by Gavaran.
“Both Gavaran and Inodeo belong to the same local party,” Mirasol added.
In 2017, Gavaran was included in the arrest order issued by Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana due to the vice mayor’s alleged links to the Mindanao-based Maute group.
But Lorenzana subsequently cleared Gavaran after knowing that “Samuel Gavaran” on the list of wanted terrorists was a namesake of the vice mayor./PN
