MANILA – The government must develop an “action plan” to address the spread of Zika in the Philippines,Sen. Nancy Binay said.
Six more Zika cases were recently confirmed, according to the Department of Health (DOH): four in Iloilo City, one in Cebu and one in Laguna. They raised the total number of cases in the country to nine.
Congress, the DOH, the national government, and the local government units must unite against emerging infectious threats, Binay said.
There is a need to enhance early detection and monitoring, and increase awareness through information, education and communication campaigns, the senator said in a resolution filed on Wednesday.
“Must we wait for the virus to spread before we take action,” Binay asked.
The World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the spread of Zika.
Zika is caused by a virus spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Those infected may experience fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and malaise or headache lasting for two days up to a week./PN
