BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts clinched the Bingawan Season 13 Volleyball Girls Secondary Championship crown with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 win over Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles on Saturday at the Bingawan Civic Center in Iloilo.

Led by Shane Carmona, Alyssa Bertolano and Joan Marie Monares, Thunderbolts took advantage of the erring Magis Eagles to improve its runner-up finish in the tournament last year.

Both teams had a tight exchange in the opening set with no teams pulling away but Thunderbolts managed to gain headways late in the set on conversions by Carmona and Bertolano.

In the second set, Thunderbolts surged to an early lead with Monares and Erika Deloria firing on the offensive end. Magis Eagles tried to inch closer but errors from them allowed Thunderbolts to build a 2-0 set lead.

Sensing the championship, Thunderbolts went for the kill early in the third set behind Monares and Carmona. The lead grew further with Bertolano and Deloria finding their way around the defense of Magis Eagles.

After the match, Carmona was hailed the Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker, Monares claimed the Best Blocker citation for the second straight year and Beatrice Decena was the Best Libero.

“It’s a total team effort for the players. We are glad that they are slowly getting used to their new teammates,” said Thunderbolts assistant coach Biboy Calamba. “This is a good sign for us heading in our future tournaments.”

Meanwhile, Bingawan National High School salvaged a third place finish after defeating Aklan Catholic College in the consolation round match./PN
