BIR expands digitalization; 85 percent of taxes now paid digitally

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said it is focusing on its digitalization programs to streamline processes and improve tax compliance this year.

At the Tax Campaign Kick-off of BIR East NCR in Cainta, BIR Commissioner Charlito Mendoza said one of the bureau’s priorities this year is to ensure processes are online and easier to access for taxpayers.

He said 2025 already saw progress in the digitalization efforts, with P3.105 trillion collected for the year. Of that amount, P2.49 trillion or 85 percent was generated through electronic payment channels.

“On the digital front, we continue to expand tools that make compliance easier and more transparent,” Mendoza said.

Some of the programs planned include setting up a taxpayers’ portal and using artificial intelligence.

“In the first weeks of 2026, we have rolled out additional tools: the LOA Verifier, the Interactive Digital Tax Calendar, and the Certificate of Registration QR Code Verifier,” he added.

Mendoza also said the BIR is pushing a new program this year called DARES, or Digital and data transformation, Audit reform and accountability, Revenue collection and base protection, Employee empowerment and welfare promotion, and Service excellence and stakeholder engagement.

Mendoza is optimistic the agency can hit the tax collection target this year of about P3.5 trillion with the help of reforms.

“Our message is clear. Comply correctly. File on time. Pay what is due. And when you do, the nation moves forward,” he said. (ABS-CBN News)
