ROXAS City – The General Services Office (GSO) reprimanded the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for violating the solid waste ordinance of the city.
Revenue District Officer Evansuenda Custodio initially refused to admit that the BIR owns the garbage piled 5 meters away from their office.
“I was not aware that the person in charge dumped [the trash] just across our office without putting them in a garbage bag,” Custodio said.
But receipts from among the trash indicated that the garbage along the street was from the Revenue bureau.
“This lot along corner McKinley-Bilbao streets in Barangay III has been a subject of our monitoring,” GSO head Glenn Amane said.
Various establishments dump garbage in this area, said Amane.
“They (BIR) can no longer deny. The documents found [from among the garbage] were theirs,” Amane added.
The GSO conducts cleanup activities in barangays in the city proper. Barangay officials were assigned to monitor their respective areas.
The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) called out 20 barangays in the city for violating the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Among them were barangays V, VII, IX, X, Lawaan, Punta Tabuc, and Tiza.
“These barangays will be invited to a technical conference at the DENR regional office,” EMB chief Vic Losbañes said.
Losbañes said the EMB will file a complaint at the Office of the Ombudsman against these barangays if their violations continue after the conference./PN
