THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region 6 held a 25k Fun Ride for bike and health enthusiasts on April 6, 2019 at Iloilo City. This is in connection with the bureau’s quest to inform the public of the necessity to get involved in ending tuberculosis, or TB.

The fun ride is the BJMP’s way of celebrating the World TB day being one of the lead agencies who actively take part in ending it.

Jail Superintendent Gilbert D. Peremne, Assistant Regional Director and Chief on Community Relations Service stressed the need for public to be fully informed of the extent of threat that TB poses not just in the community but also to persons deprived of liberty (PDL) inside the jail.

“We encourage everyone to join the fun ride and take part in public information and dissemination thereof to fight and end TB. Together we can do so much,” Peremne said.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the BJMP lead the celebration of World TB Day by holding forum, social activities and various advocacy geared toward informing the public.

Meanwhile, Jail Chief Inspector Doctor Marie Charyll Jamolo, Chief Health Division of BJMP 6 and an active advocate against TB, said getting the community involved is one of the most effective ways to educate the people.

“Health personnel cannot do it alone. TB is one of the most deadly and contiguous diseases on the list of the DOH. It can spread at a rapid rate if there is no intervention, prevention and cure for it. That is why information or knowledge of the public is of utmost importance,”  Dr. Jamolo said.

The fun ride kicked off at 5:30 in the morning at the New Dinagyang Grand Stand and traversed a designated route around the city.

“We invite everyone to come out and together we make a stand to end TB,” Jamolo added.

This activity was held in partnership with the Department of Health, the Iloilo City Health Office and the Philippine Tuberculosis Society Iloilo Chapter, Inc./PN
