ILOILO City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is investigating the death of an inmate at its male dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district.
Thirty-year-old drug suspect Jimboy Chavez of Barangay Tanza Baybay, City Proper was found dead in his detention cell on Wednesday.
Around 5 a.m. fellow inmate Junie Sibanes heard Chavez moaning and tried to wake the latter up.
Chavez, however, was no longer responsive, said Superintendent Vicente Papelera, warden.
Chavez was brought to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao district where he was declared “dead on arrival”, said Papelera.
“I inspected his body with our physician. We did not see any injuries,” he added.
While Chavez was believed to have died of natural causes, the BJMP decided to conduct a probe “to make sure the cause of death,” said Papelera.
Chavez’s body would be autopsied. His family suspected he was murdered.
Chavez was detained in cell No. 9. He was arrested in April this year during a raid of a suspected drug den in Barangay Baluarte, Molo district.
The police recovered four sachets of shabu./PN
