ILOILO City – Tropical depression “Auring” weakened into a low pressure area yesterday morning.
All sea-going vessels resumed their trips after the state weather bureau lifted storm signal warnings over Western Visayas.
According to Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of the Philippine Coast Guard – Iloilo, the Iloilo to Bacolod (and vice versa) trips of fast crafts and roll on, roll off vessels resumed by 11 a.m.
The coastguard counted over 2,000 stranded passengers at the Port of Iloilo, Lapuz wharf, arrastre pier and the port in in Dumangas, Iloilo since Sunday when the trips of sea vessels were cancelled.
There were no Auring-related incidents reported, according to Regional Director Rosario Cabrera of the Office of Civil Defense.
Around 8 a.m. yesterday, Rocky Tapales of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Region 6 announced that storm signal warnings over southern Iloilo, Guimaras, southern Antique, Negros provinces, Cuyo Island, Bohol, Siquijor, southern Leyte, Cebu, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, Dinagat province, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin were lifted.
But he said the low pressure area was expected to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Bicol region and Samar provinces, and light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms over the provinces of Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon.
“Auring” made landfall over Siargao Island on Sunday afternoon. It was the first weather disturbance in the country this year.
Cabrera told Panay News concerned agencies prepared for “Auring” as early as Saturday.
The Department of Interior and Local government (DILG) alerted various municipal disaster risk reduction and management councils.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the region readied its P3-million quick response fund.
Aside from the fund, Regional Director Rebecca Geamala of DSWD said, 10,200 food packs were also readied and more were prepositioned in the provinces of Capiz and Antique.
“Nag-check man kita sang aton search and rescue group,” said Cabrera, and this included the Regional Public Safety Battalion.
“The Philippine National Police, Arm Forces of the Philippines and Philippine Coast Guard helped in the preparations,” said Cabrera./PN
