BORACAY – Fire performers with their choreographed fire juggling, eating and breathing performances are guaranteed one of the crowd drawers in this world-famous island.
But a local ordinance regulating these performances has not been properly – or strictly –enforced.
Malay Sangguniang Bayan member Maylynn Aguirre-Graf said fire dancers and local law enforcers must be reminded of the existing municipal ordinance regulating fire dancing shows in the island enacted in 2014.
The municipal ordinance aims for the safety of tourists and performers themselves and to preserve the white-sand beaches of Boracay, Aguirre-Graf said.
According to Aguirre-Graf, she has observed that some fire performers have been violating the ordinance.
The ordinance only allows fire dancers to perform at the “vegetation area” – the portion of the beach adjacent to the path of the road where plants thrive.
Fire performers must also use a platform, lining or any covering to prevent kerosene or any flammable chemical from spilling to the white sand, the ordinance stated.
Fire dancers are also prohibited from putting out the flame of their torches or poi using the sand, it further stated.
Aguirre-Graf stressed that, “Fire performers should refrain from getting too close to the guests for safety.”
Fire dancers must also make sure that their kerosene containers must be properly sealed to avoid leakages. They must also “handle properly” their torches or pois during performances. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
