BORACAY – Three Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit meetings will be held here next month. Security will be tightened.
The 23rd Meeting of Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights will be on Feb. 13 to 15; Asean Ministerial Meeting Retreat, Feb. 19 to 21; and Asean Committee on Migrant Workers Meeting, Feb. 21 to 22.
Hundreds of police officers will secure the delegations from the Asean-member countries, according to Superintendent Pedro Enriquez, deputy director of the Aklan Police Provincial Office.
Security will be beefed up at ports, airports, roads, coastlines, hotels, and meeting venues.
Units from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Boracay Action Group and force multipliers will assist the police.
Chief Superintendent Nestor Bergonia, head secretariat, met with the local forces last year for the security preparations.
Iloilo City will also host the following Asean events:
* 22nd Senior Officials Meeting for the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council and 17th ASCC Meeting, March 6 to 9
* Asean Military Operations Informal Meeting, Asean Military Intelligence Informal Meeting and Asean Chiefs of Defense Forces Informal Meeting, March 6 to 10
* 3rd Asean Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Good Regulatory Practice Network Meeting, March 14 to 15
The Philippines’ hosting is in time for the 50th founding anniversary of the Asean themed “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World.”
It will be the Philippines’ third time to host the Asean Summit, the previous stints were in 1987 in Manila and in 2007 in Cebu.
Asean comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
