BORACAY Island – Residents in this resort-island are encouraged to support the enforcement of a local ordinance to minimize plastic use and reduce garbage here.
The start of the implementation of the municipal ordinance which prohibits the use of plastic bags on dry goods, regulates its use on wet goods and bans the use of styrofoam in the municipality of Malay is moved to July 15, according to executive assistant Jimmy Maming.
Maming said this was to give way for the information dissemination of the local government unit (LGU) of Malay about the ordinance.
The LGU first scheduled the implementation of the plastic ordinance on June 15.
He said the soft implementation of the ordinance was to enable locals and business owners in the island to adjust to the new rule.
But Maming clarified that the imposition of fines will start in January next year.
Individuals violating the ordinance will be fined P1,000 for first offense; P1,500 for second offense; and P2,500 and imprisonment of not less than one month or more than six months or both for the third offense.
Violating business establishment will face cancellation of their permits to operate for a period of one year.
Instead of plastic, locals and tourists are encouraged to use alternative packaging materials such as reusable, woven, cloth, paper and other bags made of biodegradable materials.
Meanwhile, prior to the implementation of the ordinance, Red Cross Youth-Boracay Malay Chapter, a local youth group, has already started their own initiative to minimize the use of plastic.
The group has launched a campaign dubbed “RedVolution” which urges locals and tourists to minimize plastic use, like refusing the use of straws and bringing their own bags when shopping. (PNA)
