BACOLOD City – Several Bacolodnons were recognized in separate awarding rites on June 17 and 18 at the Bacolod City Government Center.
On Saturday, the city held the Banwahanon Award to recognize four outstanding Bacolodnons – Atty. Simplicio “Sammy” Palanca, Atty. Franklin Demonteverde, Architect Armando Guevarra and entrepreneur Conchita Sicangco.
Councilor Renecito Novero said Palanca’s greatest contribution to this capital city is reclaiming the 250-hectare sea port which was transformed to an economic landscape, creating jobs and generating millions in tax revenue.
Palanca is also known to give scholarships to less fortunate but deserving students.
The philanthropist was also instrumental in building the 7-storey pilgrimage site (Pope John Paul II Tower) which is now one of the landmarks in the city.
Palanca, also the president of the Bacolod Real Estate Development, was the first recipient of the Buklod Award in 2014 during the term of then mayor Monico Puentevella.
On the other hand, Demonteverde is the founder and prime mover of Negrense 200 Foundation, Inc., a philanthropic, social, cultural, educational and environmental foundation that helps poor but deserving students to finish their education through scholarships.
Guevarra, meanwhile, is known in the art industry. He is the organizer of the Negros Kabarkada Painters Association Inc.
Sicangco, who is the founder of Bob’s chain of restaurants, is a philanthropist and an active religious lay leader.
During the commemoration of the 79th year of the signing of the Charter Day of Bacolod on Sunday, the city put into spotlight outstanding employees and taxpayers.
Wilson Verte, a utility of the Department of Public Services, received an award as one of the Outstanding Employees of the city in the non-supervisory level. Engr. Noel Impreso of the City Engineer’s Office received the same award in the supervisory level.
Five corporate businesses were also awarded as outstanding taxpayers for 2016.They were Mainstream Business, Inc. (SM Bacolod Department Store); Neo Food Corp. (Jollibee); SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM City Bacolod); Schuurmans and Van Ginneken Philippines Inc.; and Freemont Foods Corp. (Jollibee). All establishments received P5,000 each.
The top five individual business taxpayers for 2016 were Jerry Sy (Silver Dragon Construction Lumber and Glass Supply); John L. Qua (J. Qua Construction); Manuel Y. Po (LJP Trading); Jose Maria C. Cajili Jr. (CH Chicken House Bacolod); and Marlene R. Lamata (Rivson Commercial).
Meanwhile, SM Prime Holdings Inc., San Miguel Brewery Inc., Coca Cola Femsa Philippines Inc., Bacolod Capitol Hills Land Development Corp., and Dynasty Management and Development Corp. were the top five corporate real property taxpayers for the same year.
Winning as top five individual real property taxpayers for 2016 were Rolando Corona Jr., Catherine Ong, Luis Ong, Jacinto Palma, and Belina Ong.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia also awarded special citations to the following:
