ILOCOS Sur – Western Visayas banked on a surge of gold medal hauls, including another record-shattering feat, on Thursday as it climbed to second place in the overall medal tally in the 61st Palarong Pambansa.

Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks made true to her promise to break the existing record in secondary girls high jump when she registered a 1.68m leap at the Quirino Stadium in Bantay.

Brooks, who also won gold in her pet event last year in San Jose, Antique, surpassed the 1.66m leap registered by Cavite’s Cherry Mae Banatao two years ago.

“I was not thinking about breaking the Palaro record, only to defend my gold medal, but those around me, my coach Noel (Diel) and tatay Rey (Cabarles) have been pushing me to make a record,” the native of Leon, Iloilo told Panay News.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, WV had an overall tally of 29 gold, 23 silver and 35 bronze medals – thus moving up to second place. Defending champion NCR was still on top with a 42-34-20 medal haul.

Also winning golds for WV were John Paul Balsote in elementary boys 110m hurdles, Trixie Jane Willy in elementary girls 100m hurdles and Airex Gabriel Villanueva in elementary boys discus throw.

Ritchie Estampador, meanwhile, settled for a bronze in secondary boys 5000m run while Jey Anne Dieta was third in elementary girls 400m dash.

WV once again made a gold haul in taekwondo with Cindy Joy Diasnes topping secondary girls individual poomsae, Mervonne Shane Nicor ruling elementary girls kyorugi and Allyah Dominique Eusalan dominating secondary girls kyorugi.

Taking bronze for WV were Elisha Venice Aguilar (elementary kyorugi), Joshua Cachero (secondary poomsae), Diasnes, Jamie Agaloos and Antonette Hilado (team poomsae), and Angeline Alacantara (secondary girls kyorugi).

In swimming, WV finally landed a golden finish as Alexi Cabayaran ruled elementary girls freestyle. The region also had three bronzes from Regan Garbanzos in secondary boys free style, elementary boys medley relay and secondary boys medley.

In gymnastics, Julianne Arinas, Leanna Mishka Cuansing and Angelika Buenavidez clinched silver medal in secondary girls team./PN
