Ceres blanks Global in PFL

MANILA – Ceres Negros FC continued its hot start in the 2018 Philippines Football League with a 2-0 win over Global Cebu at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Michael Ott and Stephan Schrock scored a goal each Wednesday night for the defending champion to claim the solo first spot with 9 points on three wins.

Ceres Negros was aggressive on the offensive end early with two early attempts from Bienvenido Marañon. The Busmen finally got into the scoring column in the 13th minute when Ott slots the ball toward the far post.

After the Ceres Negros conversion, Global Cebu had chances to equalize but attempts from Wesley Dos Santos and Paolo Bugas were defended well. Global’s Rufino Sanchez had two more tries but still can find the goal.

After a few more attempts from Global Cebu, Ceres Negros added to its advantage just before the halftime break as Schrock released a super volley off a corner, which hit the back of the net.

Ceres Negros had chances to increase the lead further in the second half but Global Cebu’s defense tightened a bit. The Cebuanos tried to make a goal for themselves but failed.

“This win is very important to us,” said Ceres Negros assistant coach Ian Treyes.

“With our rivalry from before, it’s very important for us to open the season with a win against them,” he added. “We hope we can continue our good performance in the next games.”

Global Cebu, which temporarily plays its home games in Manila due to the unavailability of the Cebu City Sports Complex, is currently on last place with 1 point on one draw and three losses./PN
